Highland Bulls
Thorbardin Ranch uses a very elite group of bulls each year to breed
its purebred Highland cows at the Buffalo Ranch. The mature bulls shown
below have been in the program for at least one previous year. Bulls
are constantly culled based on their working ability, their body score
and how they hold up as a result of breeding.
Thorbardin Ranch bulls are chosen at weaning time based on growth, conformation
and disposition. They are then tested in a performance setting at our
Laramie Ranch. Yearling bulls are used extensively and those that don’t
hold up or work to the degree we feel is suitable for our program are
removed after the first breeding season in the fall.
These bulls shown below have also shown to produce superior calves based
on DNA testing of the ranch’s heifer and bull calves in previous
years. These bulls have also shown tremendous ability to hold themselves
together in breeding a large herd of cows in hot summer heat on hilly
terrain.
Thorbardin’s Gandolf is currently our top bull in the Highland
program. Yet, in the same breath each year we work hard to find a bull
that is better than he is.
