Beef Cattle Purchases
Thorbardin Ranch is pleased to offer a buying program for highland calves and yearlings of all sexes. While the Ranch may buy calves throughout the year, we encourage breeders to sell weaned calves in October/November period so we can add them to our own calf crop and put them under the identical management.
General guidelines in selling calves to Thorbardin Ranch.
- All calves must be ear-tagged and a date of birth provided. Some of our beef buyers as a result of BSE regulations ask this of us upon slaughter. Simple month and year when born is sufficient for example April 2004.
- All weaned heifers must be bangs vaccinated or spayed. No exceptions to this rule.
- Weaned calves must weigh a minimum of 325 lbs and should be off their mother for a minimum of 2-weeks. Vaccination programs are a plus.
- Bull-calves can be intact up to 12-months of age.
- Maximum age of bull calves is 12 months, steers 24 months and heifers 24 months that will be bought and put into the beef program.
- Out of state sales require health and brand papers if you are in a brand area.
Pricing is a function of the quality of animal, age of an animal, time of year purchased, weight of animal and delivery point along with current and future cattle and grain markets. There is a sliding scale in $/lb value similar to all cattle markets.

Highland Herd Purchases
Thorbardin Ranch realizes there are many reasons why individuals and families may exit the ranching business. Thorbardin Ranch during the course of the year will buy entire Highland herds. This of course will depend on suitable pricing terms to both parties. Cattle can be either commercial or registered stock.
- All breeding females must be bangs vaccinated to be considered for purchased.
- All intact bulls over a year’s age must be tested for fertility and trichomoniasis.
